THE VALUED PODCAST

Know Your Value

What is hindering you from fulfilling your purpose?

Shayne: [00:00:00] You’re listening to the Valued Podcast with Shayne and Luke Wyler.

Are you the valued leader that others need you to be? That is what we’re gonna talk about today. We’re gonna unpack exactly where your value comes from and in that, understand what is helping you be valued and what is hindering you and actually robbing you of your value with those that you want to lead and serve on a daily basis.

So here’s our conversation on knowing your value.

Luke: So if you don’t know your value, then you’re really not gonna be able to stand in the position that others need you to be as the leader that they need you to be. Because if you don’t really know why you should be leading them, and if you don’t really know, what your purpose in their life is… and if you don’t know what value you bring to them, you’re not gonna have the confidence to be able to stand there in that position and be a leader.

Shayne: So Luke just jumped right in today. He’s eager to talk about this. Hey Luke, welcome to the studio. I’m here. It’s great to be back talking about this very thing of knowing your value and knowing where it comes from.

So why don’t you share more about what you just said.

Luke: Well, one of the major things, that that gets in the way of you actually knowing what your value is, is, one, you don’t know what your purpose is. Two, you don’t know why others should value you because you don’t know your purpose. Three, because you’re letting other people determine your value.

You’re letting, them dictate what you bring to them, what its value is. Right? And so if you let other people dictate what your value is, and you’re only gonna really be delivering that much.

Shayne: Yeah. And I, I think one of the key things there that we have seen time and time again is that, when people allow others to determine their value, they stunt their growth.

And it’s actually a lie that, we unpack in the Lead Framework™ as we go through the whole thing. But if you allow other people to determine your value, then what you’re essentially doing is you’re actually teaching others to devalue you. Because we actually do, we do things every single day, as we’ve talked about in other episodes, that teach others to devalue us.

And that’s the kicker. Like we are responsible for some of that. There’s gonna be people in our life that we come across that just devalue based on wherever they’re at. But, then on the flip side, there are actually things that we do on a regular basis with those that we lead and serve. that teaches people how to devalue us, and then we get mad about it, right?

And then we get frustrated. Not realizing that we are actually in control of making sure people understand the value that we bring to the table. Or understanding, “Hey, you know, you should really devalue me here because this thing has really no value.” So, we teach people how to do that by our actions, [00:03:00] by the things that we say, by the things that we believe.

And as you said, Luke, as you clarify your purpose and really understand why you’re here, you know your inherent value, because, your purpose, why you’re here is to meet a very specific need in the life of those that you’re interacting with on any given day. Be it in your family, at work, in your community that has inherent value.

That need being met has value. It just does, and you can’t negate that value. That’s where your value comes from. And as you do things that get in your way of fulfilling on that purpose and meeting that need, you decrease your value. You lessen and devalue yourself in those relationships where you long to be valued.

And in this section of the Lead Framework™, one of the things that we unpack is the valued model. There is an image… if you imagine a V, there’s a valued model there, and you’re standing at the bottom of that. You have a choice at any given moment to walk one way or the other. One way leads towards the dream, the dream that you were inviting others into.

As we talked about in a previous episode. The other way leads to a nightmare for you and everyone that you’re leading in, and based on what we do, what we decide to do in any given moment… that’s gonna determine which way we’re gonna go and which way we’re going to lead, either towards the dream, we’re gonna drag people into our nightmare, and then that’s just gonna be hellish for everybody.

Luke: Right and if you don’t know your purpose, and if you don’t know your value, if you don’t know what you bring to those you lead, then you’re always gonna be stepping into the nightmare. Because, instead of leading from purpose, you’re just gonna be, making stuff up as you go and trying to… trying to take… trying to take those who follow you wherever you think is appropriate for the situation. But the truth is, you’re never really gonna be able to judge according to the situation. If you know what your purpose is and you just stand in that, that’s never gonna lead you astray. You’re just, you’re always gonna choose the right path if you are, literally doing what you’re supposed to do.

You can’t change what you’re supposed to do just based off the circumstance. You have one role to play, in any situation. So, if instead of, leading from your purpose, if you’re just trying to lead people wherever you think is right, then you’re just always gonna be leading them into the nightmare because you’re not leading them to where you should be.

So they’re gonna know that you’re just out of integrity and they’re gonna stop following you because they’re gonna know that you’re standing out of integrity and you’re, employing methods and you’re leading them to places that is just out of integrity with the one thing that you’re meant to do.

Shayne: Well, and I think that’s another key in this conversation is oftentimes we think we have more than one role and more than one job in any given situation. But truthfully, I mean, put this to the test. We’ve tested it. So [00:06:00] many times it always comes back with the exact same result. You’re here to meet one need in the lives of those that you lead and serve that shows up in many different ways. You’ve heard us say that before. It’s not many needs in many different ways, cuz that’s the lie. We’ve been told that, “No, you have to meet as many needs as you possibly can in someone’s life and all the lives that you touch in a day.” That is literally impossible and it’s a lie. Because it’s not actually how it works. How it works is you meet one need that shows up in many different ways, and the challenge is to really see how it’s showing up in the people in front of you. That’s the challenge because it’s, it may present itself differently for different people in different situations, but it’s the exact same need.

So if you go into any situation thinking, I can solve more than this need. Then, as you said, Luke, you’re gonna be standing out of position. You’re gonna be out of integrity, and before you know it, you might have great intentions, but you actually lead people astray because you have no idea how to answer those other needs.

You’ve been gifted, you’ve been given the abilities and the talents and the resources to be able to answer that one need, and the lies is that we think that that’s not enough.

Luke: Mm.

Shayne: You know, we hear this voice in our head going, you should do more. But the truth is, it is enough because there’s other people in those other people’s lives to help them get those other needs answered.

We we’re not the be all in the end all to everybody.

Luke: Well, and I was thinking about this the other day. I was looking around at, different people and I was like, I, I just wish there was some way that I could help them. Because, I see a need in them and I just want to help them. And I realized, I was like, if I can just inspire everybody around me to be obedient to what they’re called to do, to what they’re meant to do, that would fix all their problems, that would meet the need, every single need that I can in their life and everybody around me.

And not only that, but it would fix all of my problems too. Because instead of feeling hopeless, instead of feeling, meaningless, instead of feeling like I’m not really doing anything important, instead of just looking around and being like, I’m really just wasting time with my life, not really doing much here.

It would change all that I would feel valued by the people I’m helping. I would, be living on purpose. I wouldn’t just be wasting my life doing nothing. , it would be in total integrity. I would actually be doing the one thing that I can do to actually really help all those people. And not only am I helping them, but I’m helping myself too, because instead of just wasting my life doing nothing, I’m fulfilling my calling by helping them fulfill their calling, which means, instead of just wasting my life trying to figure out what I should do, I can do the one thing that I’m meant to do and put all my energy towards that, and that literally gets rid of all the [00:09:00] hopelessness, all the depression, anything that, any feeling of not being enough.

Shayne: So I, I think you hit it right on the head when you said that you, as you fulfill your purpose, you are able to answer that one need.

But in doing that, you actually enable that other person to be inspired to fulfill their calling, which then has impact and they go on to inspire someone else and make their impact and, and so on, and so on and so on, right? I mean, as cliche as it sounds, it’s like dropping a pebble in water and you see those ripples… that has effect as you live out your purpose and inspire, in your case, inspire obedience to that calling.

And as that person steps into their calling and is inspired to do so and actually fulfills on that, that’s gonna impact more and more people. And that ripple just keeps going out from there. So, cliche I know, but it’s actually, it’s actually true in practice. We’ve seen it lots. We do that with each other all the time.

There’s times I’m sitting at the desk and I can’t figure something out and you, you come, come over and you’re like, “Hey, how can I help?” And you always, figure out a way to help inspire me to my calling. And then things start moving again. And a way we go, right?

Luke: Mm-hmm.

Shayne: And I, and I do the same for you. It’s like, “Hey, I see you’re stuck in something.

It’s like, how can I, how can I help you realize your purpose? Here is what I’m thinking.” And we have that conversation and things just start to move because you unblock those things, and I’m actually answering your need for purpose in that moment. Helping you understand there is a purpose… “What’s your purpose?” “Oh right! Okay”, and then you start to live that out. That’s how this works, is that as you live into the lives of those that you’re leading and serving, and they accept that help, that valuable gift that you have has its impact, which is what it’s all about in the end. Because we can do… that’s the other thing, as you were talking there, Luke, we have talked so much about this… we can do a lot of things that just keep us busy.

Luke: Mm-hmm.

Shayne: So at the end “I go, look, look at everything that we did in our life. Look at all the stuff we did.” But we all know that if it amounts to nothing, it was in vain.

Luke: It’s not even if it just amounts to nothing or not, you can do good things and that’s good, but you can do good things that align to your purpose, the reason you are here, and those good things are life changing for everybody and for you. You’re living an entirely different life. You’re taking, your life where you just, wander around. You’re looking at somebody. , “Oh, I could just go do some good thing for that person.” And you’re taking it and you’re turning it into, a story.

You know, that might sound dramatic, but you’re literally living a story. Your life becomes a story when you’re doing the one thing that you’re supposed to do, because when you align everything to your purpose and the one thing you’re [00:12:00] supposed to do, it’s totally life changing for you and everybody around you. You know your value, you know your position in everybody else’s life, and then you just lead from that.

Shayne: And one of the key things to, to remember in that is when we talk about purpose, we’re talking about why we’re not talking about what. There are so many different, ‘what’s’ you could do to fulfill in your purpose. I mean, I could go… we have a ton of snow here… I could go and shovel my neighbor’s driveway. If I do that legitimately, is that helping them realize their purpose? Yeah. If the opportunity is is right, absolutely it is. Cuz they don’t have to go and shovel that. And if that’s the right, ‘what’ thing for me to do next to help my neighbor realize his purpose… then it’s, then it’s in integrity and it’s the right thing to do. So we’re not talking about like you’re only doing one thing, like one, one specific ‘what’ for the rest of your life. You’re gonna be doing many different, ‘whats’ all of those things that you do have to fulfill in your purpose or guaranteed you are gonna be devalued.

But if you stand in your purpose and go, “Okay, this is why I’m here now, what can I do to fulfill on that with the people around me?” That is what we are talking about.

Luke: Exactly. That like the other day. That’s exactly what I was thinking about. Like, you know when you’re looking around and you see people you need help, or even if you just feel like doing something good, any good thing that you’re gonna do is just so empty and pointless until you connect it to your purpose.

If you start at your purpose and then look out from that, everything, it, it might even be the exact same thing, but it’s gonna have so much more meaning because it has perspective. You know why you’re doing it, and you know why you are the one who should be doing.

Shayne: Yeah. And as we’ve talked about, before in this podcast, there’s things that you can do that are good.

There’s even things that you can do that are great. But good isn’t always great. Great isn’t always right, but right is always good and great. Just to confirm what you just said, if you do the right thing, it will be good and great, but you can do good things and it’s not the right thing. You can do even great things and it’s not the right thing.

Luke: Mm-hmm.

Shayne: But when you stand in your purpose and go, “Okay, if this is why I’m here, who in front of me needs that help to get that need answered?” And then do what is appropriate in that situation that is gonna be the right thing to do. And that will always be good and great.

Luke: Yeah. Cuz we’ve all, we’ve all heard of those people, met those people, seen those people who devote their entire lives to something and yeah, it’s great.

But you just, you’re kind of thinking. . I don’t think you’re the person who should be doing that. Honestly, to be totally honest with you, I think that people [00:15:00] pursue those good and great things simply because they feel empty inside. They feel like they wanna help people or, they feel like they have no purpose.

And so they’re like, “Well, you know what? I’m gonna change that. I’m gonna devote my life to something so that I have a purpose.” Well, you’re never gonna get a purpose from pursuing ‘a what’. That’s just not gonna work because as soon as you, pursue after that, ‘what’, even if it’s the right thing to do, you’re never gonna be totally in integrity because you’re not even gonna know how to lead from within that. You can’t do something. You can’t pursue a job or a ministry or whatever. You can’t devote your life to something and think that’s a purpose. Because the purpose is why you do something. So unless you have a clear why, and I don’t just mean a goal, I don’t just mean I’m doing this because I wanna make an impact or I’m doing this because, I want to have a purpose.

It doesn’t work. If you don’t have a, an actual legitimate purpose for why you are the person who should be doing that, then everything else loses perspective.

Shayne: And your value comes into question. One of the things you said, there’s so key cuz this is prominent in society right now, is, “Well, what’s your why? What’s your why? What’s your reason for doing this?” That’s not what we’re talking about. We’re not talking about something that you could put on top and go, “Well, I’m doing this because I wanna spend more time with my family, or, I’m doing this because whatever. Those are goals, really. Those are goals at the end of the day, and those are great, but if they’re not aligned to why you are here, the very reason that you are here, everywhere you are…

Same, same purpose everywhere you are. It’s not a different, a different why… depending on the circumstance or the role that you’re playing or the relationship that you’re in. It’s the exact same purpose…

Luke: Mm-hmm.

Shayne: …everywhere that you are. If that’s not aligned, you’re gonna be devalued. Just as you just said.

Something important to note is that in today’s society, people think, you know, it’s so, it’s so common to see people thinking that their value comes from their outward appearance or, what other people see when they see them, or they think that their value comes from their life… you know, their, their day-to-day, how they live, everything they do in a day, that’s where they think their value comes from.

Luke: So there’s so many people who literally think their purpose is, either living their life. Perfectly, doing everything really, really good, having a picture, perfect life, or they think their purpose is, being the best person that they can be. And that is so empty and pointless because if you’re the best person that you can be in other people’s eyes, what does that even mean?

Does that mean, people want your life because they think you’ve got it all together and it looks good, and everything seems like it’s going perfectly. Honestly, that’s so empty. You’re just pursuing happiness at this point [00:18:00] because you don’t even have an actual why to live for. You don’t have any good reason to live for, and you don’t have any, legitimate way to help other people.

So then you’re just living to be the best version of yourself. People might value you, and I quote “Value you”, for being a perfect person, but is that really value or is that just envy?

Shayne: It’s not value because as soon as you do it, to use your example, as soon as you do something that’s imperfect, your value drops somewhat drastically, depending on, whatever that action is.

But when you base your life, your business, your impact as a valued leader… I guess that’s the other thing is that, we’re speaking from a personal perspective, but this applies to groups as well. This applies to your family, your team that you work in, your, your company, your community, your even your country.

Your value comes from why you’re here. And as you stand in that and you’re able to commit to that, then you can be human. You can make mistakes, you can be flawed because it’s your purpose in why you’re here, that is guiding the way, not a goal that whether you reach it or not, because it, it’s a process.

As you walk this out, no matter what context you’re leading in, you’re gonna learn more and more and more. And the goal is to deepen your understanding on how to realize your purpose, not to get it right. Every single time. You will get better and better and better at it just by doing it. But the key is, it’s, it’s just amazing how it actually frees you up to be human and be yourself.

Just as you said, we set these goals to be ourselves and be all that we can be, but in living out your purpose, answering the need that you’re supposed to meet in the lives of those around you,, you become that and it shapes you and it molds you. And you get to analyze yourself and see, wow, this is actually getting in the way of the impact that I wanna make.

Luke: Mm-hmm. .

Shayne: “Okay, I can let that go.” It’s not a big deal, right? It’s just like, “Oh, that’s getting in the way. Let’s get rid of it. And what is working, let’s do that instead.” It it, it cuts through all the. emotion that gets in our way and the sentimentality and all of that…, “Oh, I can’t let that go cuz that’s me.” What if it’s not, what if it’s not you?

What if it’s just something that you think that you should do, which is what I wanted to point on and something that you said before is we get so cut up on should, “Oh, I should do this, I should do that. I should be this, I should be that. I should be doing this by now in my life. I, we, we should be here in our company by now.”

” Says who? Says you When you look at your purpose, then you can align to it and go, “What do we need to be doing right now? Let’s just do that.” And the results are the [00:21:00] results. And then getting those results and you can analyze, did that work or not? Did that actually help us fulfill our purpose or not? That’s where your value comes from, is by fulfilling your purpose and answering that need in the lives of those that You’re here to lead and. serve

Luke: Just something important to note is that as you fulfill your purpose, you will be the best, the best version of yourself that you can be. Because, as we discussed in the very first episode of this podcast, your value doesn’t come from who you are.

But who you are is a tool to help you fulfill your purpose. So if you are fulfilling your purpose, then you are the best version of yourself that you could ever possibly be, whatever that looks like. A big part of the knowing your value section in the Lead Framework™ is, as you said, the valued model, the nightmare side and the dream side.

And so, for, for a lot of people when they’re trying to be their best self, when they’re trying to be perfect and live a life that everybody else wants, they’re actually living on their nightmare side.

Shayne: we’re speaking from a personal perspective, but this applies to groups as well. This applies to your family, your team that you work in, your, your company, your community, your even your country.

Okay, I can let that go.” It’s not a big deal, right? It’s just like, “Oh, that’s getting in the way. Let’s get rid of it and what is working let’s do that instead.” It it, it cuts through all the emotion That gets in our way and the sentimentality and all of that. I should be this, I should be that. I should be doing this by now in my life. I, we, we should be here in our company by now.

Says, who says, . you When you look at your purpose, then you can align to it and go, “What do we need to be doing right now? Let’s just do that.” And the results are the results.

So if you are fulfilling your purpose, then you know you are the best version of yourself that you could ever possibly be, whatever that looks like. A big part of the knowing your value section in the Lead Framework™ is, as you said, the valued model, the nightmare side and the dream side.

And so, for a lot of people when they’re trying to be their best self, when they’re trying to be perfect and live a life that everybody else wants, they’re actually living on their nightmare side. They’re trying to be perfect. They’re just thinking about themselves. They don’t even care about meeting the need in anybody else’s life.

All they’re trying to do is just be the most perfect person with the most perfect life, and you don’t even care about the people you’re supposed to lead. So that is totally living on the nightmare side. Your perfect life is gonna be so empty. Even if you feel like you’ve got it all, it’s gonna feel like so pointless.

And that’s because the only way to have a purposeful life, a life that actually means something to you is to take the attention and focus off of yourself and to start living, to lead and serve other people, to start fulfilling your purpose in their life, to do what you’re called to do and to meet the needs that they have.

Shayne: So we dig into this pretty deep in the Lead Framework™, but to give you some, some overview or some some top level ideas on how this works. know, Think about yourself as everywhere you’re leading in your family at work, in your community. If you’re, listening to this as a, as a business owner or as part of a team, or even as a community, think about in context of, of what I’m about to say.

So the first thing is, as you stand at the bottom of that V, in that valued model, you have a decision to make. Am I gonna walk towards leading others to the dream that we’ve already talked about in a previous episode? Or am I gonna do what I think is best or what I think we should do that’s gonna lead [00:27:00] you to the nightmare?

And there’s a couple key things, that come out of the valued model as you, as you unpack it. So here’s some of the results. One, you get to see everything that’s standing in your way from fulfilling your purpose and everything that is actually leading you towards your purpose. And you’re gonna see the dynamics of the relationships and which you try to do that in, and why things work and why they fall apart.

Secondly, you are gonna actually see that everything that you are striving for. On the nightmare side, they’re not bad things, but because you end up demanding them because you end up just claiming them and saying, “No, this is mine and I’m gonna take it. “Whether you give it to me or not, I’m gonna take it from you.

You will give this to me.” That’s the results of the nightmare. What you’re asking for, they’re really good things. But as you walk down the nightmare path, you not only don’t get any of that, you also lose everything and all the benefits that are on the dream side. But one of the cool things is as you walk and lead others and yourself towards the dream, you get everything on the nightmare side in the positive. So as an example, one of the questions we ask in the valued model is, “What do you demand to be?” So ask yourself this as yourself, as your team, as your family, as your company, as your community. What do you demand to be? In a word, what do you demand to be? In a word, it’s things like respected or valued, or heard or understood or honored.

Whatever those things are, none of those things are bad. But when you are demanding them because you’ve walked down the nightmare path and you’re like, “Look, it, I, I don’t care. You will do this. You will respect me, you will value us, you will…” Whatever that statement is for you, that’s a nightmare for you and for everyone else.

No one wants to follow you there and you don’t even want to be there yourself. What do you demand to be in a word? That defines the nightmare. The way out of that… this is the third thing. The way out of that, as soon as you catch yourself driving towards that, or you’re in that and you’re demanding that of others, stop, look around.

Who has the need? Go answer it. It’s fulfilling your purpose. That’s the way off the nightmare. Get back on the dream and start doing the right thing, and you will probably have to apologize. For your behavior and the things that you did, but that’s just part of being a valued leader, is noting your mistakes, doing the things that make it right and then get back up, getting back on course and going, you know, “I’m sorry. I’m actually here for this. May I help you with that?” Those are some key insights that come out of the valued model, and in doing that, you’ll understand your value in a way that you only [00:30:00] can, by holding everything you do up to your purpose. Cuz that’s the measure.

“Did I fulfill it or not?” At the end of the day, that’s the question we all have to answer, is, “Did I fulfill my purpose or not in what I did with those that I had opportunity to do so?” And we have to be honest. Valued leaders are honest about that. That’s how we become more valued is because we course correct and we do the work that’s needed to make sure that next time we actually answer that need, where we’re given opportunity

Luke: And your purpose… not only is it a way to get off the nightmare, but it’s how you make sure you never even step onto the nightmare in the first place. Because if you are, if you’re being valued for why you’re here and what you’re meant to do, then you never have to demand all those other things because you don’t need them. If, if you have all you need, if you’re valued by all those you lead and serve, then what more do you need?

You don’t need to go demand those things because you already are valued by all those around you.

Shayne: Well, and the cool thing is you don’t need to demand them because they’re actually results of you fulfilling your purpose, right? Like if, as an example, if we help you realize your purpose, we’re gonna be respected and valued in your life.

We don’t have to demand that. Because we’re doing the right things and that’s just a result.

Luke: Mm-hmm.

Shayne: It’s earned right out of, not to say that, you know, you have to earn your value. That’s not what I’m saying at all, because your value is inherent in doing the right thing. Your value is inherent in your purpose, and as you step in that you are going to do the right things that then create that result in the relationships where you’re able to do that.

Luke: Not only that, but if you think about it, the reason why you’re trying to be perfect, or you’re trying to build the perfect life, or you’re trying to be the, quote unquote best version of yourself, is because you’re actually on the nightmare side and you’re just trying to get those things in a passive way. You’re just trying to build yourself up so that they just give it to you without even having to ask for it. If you’re, if you’re doing things in your life and you’re so stuck in the, that routine of, this is how I’ve always done it, so this is just how I do it… if it’s creating a nightmare in your life for you and everybody around you, then just get off of it.

What value does a routine that does no good have in your life? You know, honestly, routines, they’re good for day to day. But to be totally honest, you gotta be very careful about getting stuck in routines that are hindering you from fulfilling your purpose. Because if you’re stuck in a routine that’s not gonna let you, go out and meet the need in other people’s lives, it’s not going to allow you to live your actual life and fulfill your calling, that’s, that’s just hindering you. [00:33:00] That routine is not a tool.

Shayne: So are you the valued leader that others need you to be? Really, at the end of the day, that’s what we’re asking. And, the tools that we’ve shared with you in the valued model will help you figure that out. So here’s some key things to remember as you analyze your value in any given relationship that you’re in, be it personal or professional.

Is what you’re doing fulfilling your purpose? That’s key number one. And how you tell that is did what you just do answer that need that you recognize in their life. If not, you’re you, you’re being devalued, guaranteed. Second, the thing that you just did for that person standing in front of you, or that client or that customer or that person in your community, that product, you developed the program, you’re offering … is it actually leading others towards the dream that we defined in that previous episode? That’s number two. Third, look around you and be honest. Are you standing in a nightmare? Is everyone else standing in a nightmare? Then what you’re doing is leading you to be devalued. Those are the key things that are right there for you to assess. If you find yourself demanding something, you’re standing in the nightmare. Stop what you’re doing, look where the need is and go answer it.

So at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you know your purpose. If you know your purpose, you’ll know your value, and you’ll know why others should value you as well. You’ll know what your job is. You’ll know what you’re supposed to do in the lives of others, and you’ll know what you need to do in order to fulfill that purpose.

And when you, when you fulfill your calling and when you live out your purpose, you’re going to have purpose for your life. You won’t just be wasting your life doing nothing. You won’t be pursuing good or great things that really don’t matter. You won’t be trying to help people in meaningless ways that doesn’t help them, and it doesn’t help you.

And, on top of that, you won’t be just pursuing perfection. You won’t be trying to turn yourself into something that you’re not. When you know your purpose and you know your value, you can confidently stand where you’re supposed to and you’ll become the best version of you that you can be.

You’ll be able to lead people where they’re supposed to be, and you’ll be able to stand in the one position that you’re meant to lead from. You’ll be able to meet the need in others’ lives in the most profound way that you are able, and by doing that, you’ll be valued.
