THE VALUED PODCAST

Determine Your Mission

How do you fulfill your purpose?

Shayne: [00:00:00] You’re listening to the Valued Podcast with Shayne and Luke Wyler.

Luke: So how do you fulfill your purpose? In today’s episode, we’re gonna cover how to determine your mission. So here’s our conversation on fulfilling your purpose.

Shayne: Luke, how do you fulfill on your purpose? That is my question for today.

Luke: Well, the way that you fulfill on your purpose is through your mission. The mission is how you fulfill what you’re supposed to do. The mission is how you meet the need that you recognize in others. So, the mission is a one to three step process that each one of us has, and that process is just, the different steps that we take in order to fulfill our purpose and meet the need that we see in others.

Shayne: There you go. There’s the episode. Welcome and have a great day.

Luke: Yeah.

Shayne: So let’s unpack some of that. Your mission, you said, is how you actually go about fulfilling on your purpose. That’s what we’re gonna talk about today. That’s the core of it.

Shayne: And we’re gonna lay out really what that means and, and what it, what it is, what it isn’t, , and how to figure that out. One of the key things that you mentioned is it’s how, so your purpose, if you’ve been following along in our podcast, if you haven’t go back, you can listen to our other episodes.

Shayne: But briefly, your purpose is why you’re here. Your vision is where you’re leading to. The dream is the invitation that you are inviting others into and the dream you are being invited into as you fulfill your purpose. And now, your mission is actually how you do all that.

Shayne: Because, here, I’ll give you an example. How do you get from being devalued to valued? That’s where the mission statement comes into play. And one of the key things, and Luke, we’ve talked about this a lot. One of the key things is that most people make their mission about themselves, right?

Shayne: And really your mission statement is really meant to explain to whoever you’re talking to, whoever it is you’re trying to lead and serve, here’s the steps you’re gonna take with us in order to get that need met that we are here to meet in your life. So many people, leaders, companies, families, communities, everyone we work with…

Shayne: confuse mission with, first of all, purpose. Second of all, vision. Third of all, dream. Those are four separate things. Your purpose, your vision, your mission, and your dream. They’re four separate things that work together to accomplish and answer the need that you’re here to meet. They’re not the same thing, so don’t get confused that they are.

Shayne: They’re not, those things can’t be used interchangeably. They actually have to fit together, like, like a perfect puzzle. They, they, they can’t be, you know, you can’t take your [00:03:00] purpose out and put your mission in instead. It just, it doesn’t work like that. That’s the teaching that’s out there is that you can interchange them and that’s what causes a ton of confusion when it comes to really understanding why you’re here, where you’re leading people, what you’re inviting them into, and then ultimately how you’re actually gonna fulfill on that purpose with them and get that need answered in their life.

Luke: Yeah. Because a lot of people confuse goals with their purpose, then, the way that they fulfill on that goal is gonna be a lot different than their actual mission. So, how you fulfill on the purpose of your life is always gonna be a lot different than how you fulfill a goal.

Luke: So if you set a goal for yourself. And you say that’s your purpose, then the way that you do that is gonna be such a shallow mission. That is, that is hardly something that you can dedicate your whole life to.

Shayne: Here’s one of the things that I’ve learned over the years, that we probably haven’t even talked about a lot, and it’s this, that you can set a goal for anything you want to right? So you said that, you know, pursuing your goal is gonna be different than fulfilling your purpose and your your mission is gonna be different in that. But here’s the key. Your goals have to align with your purpose, or you’re really doing them in vain. Because you can set a goal to do anything. But what’s, why would you do that?

Shayne: You want to set what we call a wise goal, and we’re gonna get to that in a later episode. Really, your goals need to align to fulfill your purpose or they’re useless. So if you do that, if you align your goals to your purpose, then you will be using your mission to fulfill on your goals. They won’t be different from each other, so we probably haven’t talked about that enough, but that’s what I’ve noticed over the years, that it’s actually when you define your mission and understand how you actually go about answering that need and your goals align to helping answer that need in other people’s lives, your mission is, is used through all of it. Everything is aligned in that. So the first key takeaway is that your mission is actually how you fulfill in your purpose and your purpose, your dream, your vision and your mission all work together. They are not interchangeable.

Shayne: They are exclusive, but work together to achieve and answer the need that you’re here to meet in the lives of those that you lead and serve every single day.

Luke: The second thing is that your mission is one to three steps. So that’s, one to three steps on how you fulfill your purpose. So, the first example was clarify your purpose, align all you do to that purpose, and then lead from that purpose. These three steps are gonna be something that you do in the lives of others to help meet that need that you see in them.

Shayne: That’s right. As you engage with them and as you fulfill your purpose in their [00:06:00] life and answer that need that you’re there to serve, it’s always come down to one to three steps that somebody, either a person or, an organization, family, community, in all of that, there’s always been one to three steps that they’ve been able to figure out to say…

Shayne: Yes, in order to get that need met in your life, first you have to do this, then you have to do this, then you have to do that. So most have three steps, some have two. And very rarely somebody or a group will have one thing that they do just over and over and over again. And that leads me to the next point in this is that … I’ll use us as an example.

Shayne: The very first thing you need, in order to realize your purpose and be the value leader that you need to be, is first you need to clarify that purpose. Then, as you said, the second thing you need to do is align all you do to fulfill on that purpose, or you’re gonna be out of integrity and you’re not actually gonna realize your purpose and be the value leader you need to be.

Shayne: So that’s the second thing you do, and that’s where most of the work is spent, is aligning everything you’re doing to make sure that it’s fulfilling on that purpose and not hindering you in that. And then last. You need to lead from that purpose everywhere you go. And here’s the cool thing. As you step out to lead, you get more information, which clarifies your purpose on deeper and deeper levels.

Shayne: You understand it at deeper and deeper levels, and you’re like, oh, okay. And then you can align more stuff and lead from there. And as you lead from there, you get more clarity. You align, you lead, right? It’s that simple process over and over and over again, which makes you a more and more valuable leader, over time as you continue to fulfill your purpose throughout your life, throughout the life of your business or your family, your community, whatever context you’re looking at.

Luke: Talking about value, interesting thing is, your purpose is what you are valued for.

Luke: Like your purpose is what others value you for. So, I mean, if you think about it, your mission is how you fulfill your purpose. Your mission is the job that you are valued for. If, if you think about it, that’s the things that you are doing to be valued.

Shayne: Agreed.

Shayne: Because the better we are at helping somebody clarify their purpose, step number one, the more value is there.

Shayne: The better we are at helping you align all you do to fulfill that purpose, the more valuable that is. And the better we do at teaching you how to lead from your purpose, the more value that’s there. You’re absolutely right in that, that what you do is actually defined by your mission, because all the, ‘what’s’ that we do, this podcast, the questions we answer in the, in the lead framework that we’re going through right now, all of those are there because we gotta help you clarify your purpose, align, know you do to fulfill that purpose and then lead from it.

Shayne: So everything we’re doing… all the what that we, that we do… is dictated by [00:09:00] first our purpose and then and then our mission, because it’s our mission that we can then use, which leads me to the next point we can then use to measure our success in doing that or not. Are we actually meeting the need? Are we actually helping you realize your purpose?

Shayne: Well, we can take a look at what we’re doing in each of those three steps and ask ourselves, is it working or not? If it is working, keep doing it and keep doing it better and better. If it’s not, then get rid of it. Or if you’re not quite sure, maybe it needs a little bit of a tweak in there. You tweak it and then something clicks and then it starts to work.

Shayne: That’s the key stuff in terms of living out your mission in order to fulfill on your purpose.

Luke: Yeah. Your mission is a great way to measure how well you’re fulfilling your purpose. Because if, if what you’re doing in your mission is actually meeting the need that you see in others, and you’re being valued for doing that in the lives of others, then you know that you’ve fulfilled your purpose because it has to go both ways.

Luke: You have to meet that need and. you have to be valued for doing that because if you’re not valued for doing that, then you’re not standing in an opportunity. So if you are meeting the need in somebody’s life and you’re being devalued, while you’re doing your mission and you’re meeting that need for them, if they devalue you, then you’re not standing in an opportunity and you’re not actually in a place where you can fulfill your purpose.

Shayne: That’s right. So that’s, that’s the second point, is that your mission is actually the thing that you measure your success by. It’s the thing that dictates whether you’re successful or not. Because at the end of the day, it is the thing that helps you know if you are answering the need or not. It’s, it’s the mission by which you measure, what are we doing?

Shayne: How’s it going? Is it working, is it not working? That’s your mission. It tells you those things as you walk through that.

Luke: So the next point is that your mission is actually how you know what tools you need to fulfill your purpose. So in order to fulfill your mission, to do your mission, you’ll have a certain set of tools that you need to help do that.

Luke: And by actually, fulfilling your mission and actually going through all those steps, that’s how you’re gonna know what tools you need. Because as you’re going through that, you’re gonna know, what tools help you, what tools don’t.

Shayne: Yeah. And a tool is in, in the context of fulfilling your purpose, a tool is anything that you can use to fulfill on that purpose to answer that need.

Shayne: That’s right. It could be, it could be a partnership, like, you know, it could be another person. It could be, time that you spend, money that you spend. It could be, a method like, like a way of doing something. And it could be just something that you have, like the stuff of life, the stuff of business, the stuff could be products and services, right?

Shayne: You can take a look at your products and services, from a business perspective, and [00:12:00] go, in relation to meeting the need and fulfilling on our mission, “How does this product or service actually help us do that? How is it measuring up?” I mean, we, we’ve done that over the years. This lead framework that we’re walking through,

Shayne: “How does it actually help you realize your purpose and be the valued leader?” That’s our product. We’ve measured that in so many different areas and so many different cases, and myriads of, different circumstances. And it’s proven itself time and time again. Now, over the years, there were things in this framework that are no longer there because they just, they didn’t need to be. Because either they were a tool that somebody else was teaching and teaching it well. We don’t need to do that. So we would just refer to that particular company or that particular person to actually teach you how to do that. Or it was actually something that was getting in the way. It was slowing it down. It didn’t need to be talked about. It was just, it was interesting stuff, but it didn’t actually help you realize your purpose and fulfill on it.

Shayne: So it got cut out. That’s the same thing for every single person. As you take a look at this in your, in your mission and go, okay, what’s step number one and what do I have in my toolkit to be able to lead somebody through that first step to get to help get that need answered? You lay that on the table and you have to be honest about it.

Shayne: Is it working? Is it not working? Second step, third step, and you do the same thing. And then over time, you build out that core toolkit that you can use every single time, no matter where you have opportunities, that core toolkit is gonna work. That’s the challenge.

Shayne: That’s the goal that, I mean, that’s the thing that we’ve tried to do over the years is, “What are the core tools that we have that we can use anywhere and everywhere?” Let’s just focus on those. Because then, you’re not carrying around extra baggage. So when things happen, like crisis hits as an example, you’re not having to streamline a whole bunch of stuff because it’s already streamlined, right?

Shayne: You can, you can weather any storm that comes through because you know that what you’re doing to fulfill your mission and realize your purpose is what you would do regardless of what’s going on.

Luke: And the other thing too is that when you’re spending time using the tools that don’t really fit the job, but you’re just using whatever tools you have, all the extra tools that you’ve given yourself that you’ve accumulated because you think you need, when you’re using those, you’re just gonna lose people along the way in the process because it’s not really a good fit for the job.

Luke: And then people just kind of get lost along the way. They don’t entirely get that full experience when you’re not working to your best standards using those non-ideal tools.

Shayne: Well, and that’s the thing that people get distracted, right? As soon as you’re throwing something into [00:15:00] the mix that isn’t actually fulfilling on your purpose, just because it’s cool, it’s gonna distract them and then they’re gonna be like, oh, why are we here again?

Shayne: Look at your products, look at your services. Look at how you’re going about answering that need in the lives of those that you’re leading and serving every day.

Shayne: It could be, you know, you and your family. Like, how are you meeting that need in your family? Whatever the context, what are you doing and is it actually working? Because there’s a, there’s something amazing that happens when everything gets aligned, stuff becomes really fun, and it becomes an adventure.

Shayne: You don’t have to work as hard. You still have to work hard, but you’re not working against yourself. The goal is to get there and be there on purpose, right? So that you can align stuff so that it’s streamlined, so that you can enjoy the process as you go along.

Shayne: And then actually like be in the moment and be with the people that you’re loving and serving and leading. Because when you can do that, it changes everything. Those that you’re leading and serving, they actually need you to be clear on how to get that need answered or they’re not gonna follow you.

Shayne: If we were to say, “Hey, we’re here to help you realize your purpose”, and we never tell you the steps to take to do that, it does you no good. If we never said, okay, the first thing you, you need to do is clarify your purpose, so let’s do that.

Shayne: You’re just gonna be standing there going, oh yeah, I’d love to know my purpose, but I don’t know how.

Luke: Mm-hmm. .

Shayne: And if we told you, so that this is two parts, if we told you, “Hey, you gotta clarify your purpose” and then never helped you… , we’re not doing you a, a service, we’re not of value to you because we’re not doing what we promised that we would.

Shayne: Which is to help you realize it. Secondly, if we don’t help you align everything you’re doing quickly, efficiently, and simply, then again, you’re gonna get lost along the way. If we don’t give you the tools to be able to go, “Do I need to do this or not do this?”, then we, again, we have no value in your life and, we shouldn’t be doing what we’re doing.

Shayne: And then lastly, if we don’t show you how to lead and confirm and help you know when you’re leading and when you’re not leading from your purpose, again, we’re not doing our job. Just as you said in the beginning. Your mission actually tells you what your job is, and that’s a key thing that most people miss.

Shayne: Our job doesn’t start until we have to clarify your purpose, and it ends at helping you lead from your purpose. If you’re not ready to clarify your purpose, we can’t do our job yet, and if you’re not willing to lead from your purpose, we can’t help you. But as soon as you’re willing to lead and learn how to lead, we’ve shown you how to do that.

Shayne: Then we’re here to help you dig deeper and deeper and deeper in that as we go through that process over and over and over again. However, that’s our [00:18:00] job. It starts at clarifying your purpose. It ends at showing you how to lead from it. Anything beyond that, you need somebody else’s help that compliments what we’re doing, but that’s really somebody else’s job.

Shayne: So many of us get dragged in either before because we’re like, “Oh, the needs there and we, we need to jump in”, but the person’s not ready to actually do the work for you to do your job. And then this is, this is the harder part, Luke, and I know that we’ve talked about this quite a bit, is that we hang on too long.

Shayne: Because we enjoyed helping that person along there. But if you don’t go, “Okay, my job is done, and now it’s somebody else’s job to take you to the next step”, you’re actually hindering that person that you’re trying to to serve because they no longer need your help really. They need the next person’s help, which is almost counterproductive, but that’s how you become a valued leader. You gotta know where your job starts and where it ends. Those lines can’t be blurred. They have to be hard lines. Otherwise, we’re doing a disservice to everyone that we’re trying to help because we’re trying to hold them back to go, “No, stay with us a little bit longer”.

Shayne: When that’s not the right thing for them, they need to take the next step.

Luke: So to sum it all up, your mission is how you fulfill your purpose. It’s the one to three step process that you do to actually fulfill your purpose in the lives of others. Now you’re valued for why you’re here. But if you can’t actually deliver that to other people, then it has no meaning to them, and it has absolutely no value to them or you.

Luke: So in order to actually be valued for why you’re here, you actually have to fulfill on that. You actually have to live it out and do it, and you actually have to meet the need that you recognize in others. And in order to meet the need, you have to follow a one to three step process that actually allows you to fulfill that in their life in the right way.

Luke: Now, there may be other ways that you can, meet that need for them, whatever, but there’s only, there’s really only one way that you can actually meet that need for them in the fullest way possible. So whatever that one to three step process is, that’s your mission. That’s how you fulfill your purpose.

Luke: And within that, there’s many tools that can either help or hinder you. And by actually fulfilling your mission, that’s how you’re gonna know what tools you need. As you go through it, you’re gonna know, oh, I, I, I really need this tool, or this tool’s not helping me at all. I can just get rid of it.

Luke: And by actually refining your tool set, all the stuff that you use, all the things that you use, whatever, whatever those tools are, by refining those and getting them down to just the tools that are meant to be there, [00:21:00] you’re gonna be able to fulfill that in the lives of others in the fullest sense possible.

Shayne: So one of the key takeaways that I’ve learned over the years of helping leaders define and determine what their mission is, is not only does it tell you where, when your job starts and when it ends, it actually dictates and helps you understand on how to lead while you’re in it. So here’s an example. I actually can’t move on to step two.

Shayne: I actually can’t help you realize your purpose by aligning all you do to fulfill it until I’ve actually helped you clarify it. Because if you don’t know why you’re here, any work you do to align what you’re doing really has no context. You actually need to clarify your purpose first. “Makes sense, right?”, before you start aligning everything you’re doing.

Shayne: And then lastly, I, I can’t actually help you lead from your purpose until we’ve done the work to align everything and taught you how to align everything that you’re doing to that. So it’ll be the exact same for you. However many steps you have, be it one or three or two, you can’t move on to the next stage until that person is ready to do so.

Shayne: That could be, within five minutes, that could be 50 years from now. Your mission helps you keep pace with those that you’re serving, and as we talked about, helps you understand what you need to do, in each of those stages, in each of those steps to help get that need answered at a deeper and deeper level.

Shayne: So if you find yourself stepping out boldly to fulfill on your purpose, and you’ve determined what your mission is and you’re being devalued, there’s a couple things at play. Maybe, maybe what you’re doing isn’t actually answering the need. Maybe the person doesn’t want your help. Those are two key things. Maybe you’re going too fast.

Shayne: All of those things would point to, you need to slow down, you need to get back on pace with your mission. And something that we’re gonna talk about in a couple episodes is maybe you’re not standing in an opportunity. Maybe you’re really not in an opportunity, maybe you’re in a distraction. So my challenge to you, if you’ve, if you know why you’re here …

Shayne: If you understand and have clarified your purpose, figure out what are the one to three things that you do. If you need help in that, we are here to help you. But that’s your mission. That’s how you go about fulfilling on your purpose. So that’s the key takeaway. Go determine your mission. Go fulfill your purpose.
